How Travel Influences Art
Most of us love to take vacations. There are beautiful destinations that we have either visited or would love to travel to one day, places that inspire us and fill our imaginations.
For artists, this is true as well. There are many who have been inspired by the beautiful architecture of Rome, the fantastic natural wonders of Australia, or the culture of France. It has become such a great inspiration, that the reality is that travel has had a tremendous impact on the world of art in many ways.
It Started Hundreds of Years Ago
It is quite easy for people to get from one destination to another these days. At most, a person may spend a day or two traveling via airplane from one city to another, no matter if that destination is thousands of miles away.
However, that was not always the case. A little over 100 years ago, the primary way that people traveled from one continent to another was by ship. This could take days, maybe even weeks, so people were denied the opportunity to visit glamorous places.
In fact, many would not have even known about these destinations had it not been for art. People learned about the majestic sunsets in Japan, the beautiful beaches on tropical islands, or the spectacular deserts of the United States through art. They may not have been able to visit these places personally, but they could learn about them through art pieces.
These works helped to inspire generations to want to travel. Photographs, paintings, and other forms of artwork helped to inspire the imaginations of millions of people, leading many to make a long, sometimes treacherous voyages to enjoy the beauty of this planet.
Artists Bringing Destinations to Light
It was the work of artists who helped to inspire millions to travel. They saw the beauty of the pyramids in Egypt, the New York skyline, or beach artwork and knew they had to see them. They became a pilgrimage of sorts for many, who felt captivated by the artwork.
This is how art has dramatically changed travel for about 400 years. Many have been inspired to visit exotic or ancient civilizations because of paintings and pictures they saw. They found themselves captivated by landscape artwork such as Greece by Edward Lear or the Charing Cross Bridge by Andre Derain and had to get to these places.
This kind of thing is still common today. People see Disney fan art or images and want to visit one of the beautiful parks. They look at animal art from safaris or the rain forests and feel inspired to see these animals up close. So, it is not surprising how art inspired people hundreds of years ago. Once our imagination is captivated, it is hard for us to let it go.
